Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) and Continental Subaru today presented a check for $34,286.39 to Anchorage local charity, Newborns In Need, a non-profit charity benefitting families in the Anchorage community who have been identified as needing assistance in what can be a very stress-filled time in their lives.

“Last year, our total annual operating budget was only $595. Many times, our volunteers donate items out of their own pockets to make sure that diaper bags are filled to be delivered to those who are in need,” says Kim Schlimgen, vice president of the small Alaskan charity as well as Continental Subaru’s Customer Relations Manager. Each month, a small group of volunteers provide diaper bags filled with formula, diapers, clothing, and blankets which are then distributed throughout various family practices and health care providers in Anchorage. In addition, these filled diaper bags are also flown to Bethel’s pre-maternal home. Many of these items are handmade by the same small group of volunteers.

Continental team members chose Newborns in Need during a nomination process involving everyone’s input at Continental Auto Group – a family-owned and operated Anchorage dealership since 1971.

“We’re one huge family at Continental. We work together, play together, and we encourage each other to volunteer in our community. This check from Subaru of America is such a blessing,” commented Marten Martensen, Co-Principal Owner, Continental Auto Group. “We’re just thrilled for Newborns In Need. These funds are going to have such an impact on our Alaskan families,” added Derek Adolf, Co-Principal Owner, Continental Auto Group.

“That’s what being a locally owned business means in Alaska. We’re your friends, neighbors and volunteers – we’re truly invested in our community.”

From November 17, 2016 to January 3, 2017, customers who purchased or leased a new Subaru vehicle could select from a list of charities to receive a donation of $250 from SOA. Since the start of the “Share the Love” program in 2008, Subaru of America has donated approximately $93 million to a number of worthy causes through the “Share the Love” event. The four national charities selected by SOA are: ASPCA®, Make-A-Wish®, Meals on Wheels Association of America® and the National Park Foundation.

Anyone interested in volunteering or donating to Newborns In Need, should contact Kim Schlimgen at (907) 952-7487 or ks1795@gmail.com.

A local nonprofit, Newborns in Need, was selected as the recipient of a dealership's charitable contribution this year. The group ended up getting far more than they could have hoped for.

It’s one of the most colorful sporting events in Anchorage! The Alaska Ski for Women event, held every Superbowl Sunday, brings out hundreds of women of all ages to ski for the benefit of non-profit agencies dedicated to fighting domestic violence and bettering the lives of all Alaskan women. In the event’s 21st year, approximately 800 costumed-clad participants braved below freezing weather, gliding through Anchorage’s dense ice fog in Kincaid Park on February 7th.

Since the event’s inception, over $1 million has been contributed to agencies that actively work to help stop the cycle of domestic abuse for Alaskan women’s and their children’s lives.

“Continental Subaru believes in supporting our Anchorage community in sponsoring events like Ski for Women.”, Derek Adolf, Principal Owner Continental Subaru. “When we invest in our community in meaningful ways, we ALL benefit!” Continental Subaru, a family owned and operated business for 46 years, actively participates in many of Anchorage’s community events.

2016 CAG Blood Drive

January 10th, 2017
Rich donating blood.
Rich donating blood.

Every two seconds, someone is need of a blood donation – and in Alaska, that problem is compounded even further, considering our geography and topography. That’s why Continental Auto Group’s team held a blood drive on December 20th.

“We are all a part of the bigger picture here”, says Derek Adolf, Principal Owner of Continental Auto Group. “Community doesn’t work unless we all do our part, no matter if it’s a pint of blood or donating a can of food.”

One donation, one unit of blood, can be separated into several components: red blood cells, plasma; platelets and cryoprecipitate. Donated blood is used during trauma cases; platelets drawn from donations can help patients with leukemia and many people who suffer from severe sickle cell disease must have monthly blood transfusions

During Continental’s Blood Drive, over 21 units of blood were taken; potentially saving 63 lives in Alaska. “We’re definitely committed to having the blood mobile out again this coming summer. It’s just the right thing to do for our community,” says Adolf.
